Holding the Adjustment & Healing
The Process of Self-Healing, Objective Indicators, and Alignment Maintenance
Recovery: The Process of Self-Healing
Healing does not come from the adjustment itself but comes from your body, once stress and interference are removed. This is known as self-healing. The role of the chiropractor is to restore alignment to the spine so the nervous system can once again function freely and optimally. When the body is able to regulate itself without interference, it begins to correct, repair, and heal.
Correction must be maintained long enough for healing to occur. Holding the adjustment is essential. Patients often expect symptoms to disappear immediately, but true healing takes time. Symptom relief is not the only indicator of progress; in fact, focusing solely on symptoms can be misleading, as symptoms can fluctuate based on many external variables.
Instead, we measure structural indicators such as pelvic leveling, leg-length symmetry, and spinal posture to determine whether your body is holding the correction. The longer the spine remains aligned, the better the opportunity for healing.
Holding is the True Goal
Holding the adjustment is the true goal of care. Frequent re-adjustments are not the aim; rather, we seek lasting correction that the body can maintain.
