The Chiropractic Adjustment

Restoring Anatomical Alignment & Normalizing Neurological Function

Clinical Definition

Understanding the Chiropractic Adjustment

In chiropractic care, the term “adjustment” refers to a specific, purposeful correction applied to a spinal vertebra that has become misaligned—a condition known as vertebral subluxation. Subluxations interfere with normal nervous system function and, if left uncorrected, can negatively affect the body’s ability to regulate and heal itself.

The goal of an upper cervical chiropractic adjustment is not merely to move the bone, but to restore it to its correct anatomical position. This correction allows the nervous system to function without interference. At our office, we use the term “adjustment” deliberately, as it reflects the goal of setting the vertebra right—not simply altering its position.

The purpose of a chiropractic adjustment is not to simply manipulate or move the bone, but to restore it to its proper alignment. In doing so, we help normalize neurological function and enable the body to better heal itself.

An adjustment is only effective when the vertebra is returned to its correct position. Simply moving it to another position is not a correction. True chiropractic adjustments are based on specificity, control, and intent—rooted in structural and neurological principles.

"To Set Right"

The term “adjustment” is used purposefully in our office, because it means “to set right” and that is our objective: to restore correct positioning to vertebrae that have become displaced.

Specificity: Calculated to the exact degree of misalignment
Control: Calibrated force guided by 3-plane measurements
Intent: Restoring full nervous system conduction

Why Alignment Matters: The Nervous System Connection

The spine protects the spinal cord, which is the main communication highway of the body. Every function—movement, sensation, organ control, healing—is regulated by the nervous system. Misalignment in the spine can distort this communication, placing stress on the body and leading to a wide variety of health challenges.

When vertebrae are misaligned, the nerves passing through those segments may become compressed or irritated, diminishing their ability to relay signals clearly and efficiently. Over time, this stress may manifest as pain, postural distortion, reduced mobility, or dysfunction in related organs and tissues. Correcting these misalignments supports the nervous system and restores the body’s internal environment, allowing natural healing to take place.

Upper Cervical Focus

The Atlas Subluxation Complex (ASC)

Our practice specializes in a technique called NUCCA (National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association), which addresses the uppermost vertebra in the spine—the atlas (C1). Though small, the atlas plays a critical role in overall body health due to its close proximity to the brainstem, which serves as the communication bridge between the brain and the rest of the body (the central nervous system).

This area is uniquely sensitive and neurologically significant. The atlas is situated at the intersection of the brain and spinal cord, affecting the entire nervous system when misaligned. Even a slight displacement of the atlas from the vertical axis can create widespread neurological interference, affecting muscle coordination, posture, and the regulation of vital body systems.

The condition that results from this misalignment is referred to as the Atlas Subluxation Complex (ASC). ASC creates structural distortion throughout the entire spinal column and pelvis, caused by reflex muscular contractions in response to neurological stress.

> 90% Compensatory Misalignment

Over 90% of patients with atlas misalignments also present with compensatory misalignments in the vertebrae below.

Because the atlas is the cornerstone at the top of the spinal column, a precise correction to the atlas often results in a positive cascading effect throughout the entire spine and pelvis.
